Have writer's block? Not sure what to write next?

Authors often find themselves without a way forward in their story. They aren't sure where they want to go next or perhaps what a character should say. There may be several different solutions for the various reasons you may be in this predicament. The tips below can help you get past your writer's block.

  • Re-read the last few chapters of your manuscript. This may help you see the trajectory you need to follow. BUT don't get bogged down with editing! It can be tempting to make changes, but at this point in your journey you are simply trying to finish the story.
  • Skip it. If you are uncertain how to describe a character or maybe there's a scene you know needs to happen but you aren't sure how—skip it. Write yourself a comment within the document saying what you need to fix later. Then future you can fill it in. Just make sure to keep future you happy with their beverage of choice!
  • Ask an alpha reader or a friend to read what you have so far. They may be able to see the issue or make suggestions. This is a great use for critique groups. Being able to bounce ideas off of each other and also reading what others have to offer are great ways to get new ideas and make break throughs in your own writing.
  • Re-read your favorite books in the genre you're writing. This isn't for pleasure, you're reading for a purpose. How does this author structure their book? How are the characters interacting? Make notes of what you like and think about why you like them, why they work in the book. Then take these lessons and apply them to your manuscript.

If you think it's time for professional help, you can look into a book coach or a manuscript evaluation. A book coach will be more hands on and for a longer time period, while an editor performing a manuscript evaluation will be able to finish fairly quickly and be less expensive. You'll want to consider your specific needs and budget.

There's more to writing a thriller than just having a scary idea. You need to pull your reader in and then entice them to turn the page. You can do this through creating characters they care about and keeping them guessing with foreshadowing and plot twists.
